4 Simple Tips: Gift Organization

It’s the holiday season, and pretty soon you’ll be mailing out cards and wrapping up gifts! There’s nothing worse than forgetting a present or card for someone you reach out to every year around this time. The best way to make sure you don’t miss anyone is to stay organized; whether that means making a list – and checking it twice – or simply setting reminders on your phone, you’ll want to employ some sort of organizational strategy for the holidays.

Spreadsheets and Lists

Programs like Google Sheets and Microsoft Excel are perfect for holiday gift lists. Organize your gift recipients into categories: gifts to mail, cards to send, and gifts to bring to an event. Set timelines and budget information for each person; if there’s a party or event to attend, make note of that.

If you prefer to make lists on paper, remember to leave room to write the status of each person’s gift. You’ll want tags like these: purchased, wrapped, labeled, mailed, and received. You could also combine your to-do list with your gift list so that you can cross things off as you go. Create a system that works for you – if you don’t like it, you won’t use it!

Physical Organization

If you’re someone who doesn’t excel at programs like Sheets and Excel, try organizing wrapped gifts and pre-written cards in a physical location in your home. It would be a holiday tragedy to run around the house looking for the right gift before heading to a party! Keep your cards in envelopes, stamped and ready to mail when the time is right; pile them up high and send them all at once!

Big Bags

Should you be bringing stacks of gifts to someone’s house for a party or get-together, see if you can find some oversized bags. These can help organize presents in your home and keep them together so that they are ready to be toted out the door at a moment’s notice.

Label Everything

Even if you think it’s pretty obvious right now whose gift is for whom, do yourself a favor and label the outside of the present with the recipient’s name. In the middle of a holiday rush, you’re likely to forget which shape was the smart home device and which was the charcuterie gift set!

Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind while you prepare for your holiday parties and get-togethers is to have fun. Keep the joy in the season by staving off stress – through your organization! If you are stressing less, that will help you focus on the real reason we celebrate the holidays. This is a time to reach out to family, so send personalized cards even if you don’t have a huge budget for gifts.

Above all, don’t forget to spend time with the ones you love, even if it’s just over peppermint hot chocolate while wrapping gifts.
